This is a worsted version of the Irish Hiking Hat pattern. It used about 2/3 of a skein of Wool-Ease. I only used one set of decreases instead of adding a second set like I did on the bulky version. It makes the top point but it flattens out just fine when you have it on.
I also doubled the cabled band for extra ear warmth. That’s an extra layer of reverse stockinette all around the inside of the hat.

Do you think the doubled cable band (self lining) would work instead of the fleece lining in the bulky yarn version? Or would it wind up being too thick? I plan on using Berkshire Bulky instead of the Wool-Ease. I’ve looked at the unlined version with seed stitch, but I think the other edging is more attractive.
Maybe. I’d swatch a full repeat of the cable with the reverse stockinette on the side, fold it over and see what happens. It depends on how bulky you like your hats and how squishy the yarn is. I suppose you could just do 3-4 stitches of stockinette on the bottom of the cable and let it curl under a bit. Or you could pick up the bottom side stitches and knit a couple of rows of garter stitch. I agree, the seed stitch version doesn’t look as “finished”. Let me know how it works out.
Though I’ve knitted several items, this is my first attempt at a hat. I’m confused about the band directions and was hoping you could clarify them for me…
After casting on 38 stitches, I don’t understand the “turn” direction after only 28 stitches (what happens to those last 10 stitches? Shouldn’t they end up being a stockinette stitch to be folded under?) Perhaps I’m just not well enough versed in the terminology and am assuming “turn” means to go to the next row…
Thanks for any help you can give me!
Lorrie, it’s not you – Thanks for catching that 🙂 The pdf is fixed to say 28. I think I was still woozy from the turkey when I posted it the first time.
Is this hat normally worn by men and women? Looking for a good Christmas gift for brother in-law who appreciates knitting women. His new job takes him out in the cold most of the day.
Replying to a couple of questions here that I originally replied to in email:
Both men and women like the hat.
The average length of the cabled band is 21″- 22″
If you don’t want the top to point (you want it to lay flat like the bulky weight version) you can certainly do the second set of decreases as in the bulky weight version but make sure to allow some extra height when you first start the crown (right after you pick up the stitches from the band) to offset the faster decreases at the top.
I SLip stiched the first stitch of each row on the cable band it made picking up the stiches along on side easier. I was thinking that you could do the same on the bottom to knit a lining ,then whip stitch to the top of the cable band…
[…] This is one of my current in-progress projects. I’m knitting it out of Caron SimplySoft in Embroidery Print. This stuff is so bright, and so very near hideous, that it’s awesome. I hope Dana likes her hat. I plan on making one of these hats for myself, but it will probably end up being done in something boring like black. Or the leftover yarn bits from the Fourth Doctor scarf I’m knitting for Catherine. […]

Is this pattern available in infant version? If so, where do I get it please.
