I know I’m late to the slouchy hat party. I’ve been looking for a pattern that looked a certain way and I just couldn’t find it. Something slouchy, but not too slouchy. Something with texture but not too complicated. Something that didn’t look totally stupid on me but yet kept my ears warm.
Could. not. find. anything.
So I made up one.
I present to you: Another Slouchy Hat

If you would like your own slouchy hat, please try the pattern: Another Slouchy Hat Pattern
And feel free to post comments and questions here or on Ravelry.

Enjoy and stay warm out there!
UPDATE: It seems that the video I referred to in the comments for M1P is gone. Here is another video by Flow Design Studio showing the stitch. It’s kind of like a purled version of kfb.

Thanks for the pattern! I like the hat a lot.
Just a tad slouchy which is exactly what I’m looking for. Thanks!
The link is no good.
But the hat looks great; who wants to send me the pattern?
Not sure what was up with the link but it seems to be working now.
I always wonder what kind of circular needles did you use and how many?I don’t know how to use circular needles but I will like to try. >^-^<
I use Knitpicks Harmony circs for most everything. They are pointy without hurting my fingers, have nice smooth joins and REALLY flexible cables and they’re pretty too.
Hi, I have tried out this slouch hat but it turn out to be a size of a baby head. I used bulky yarn, less than half a ball already completed. I actually want to make one for myself..
[...] 21, 2009 by imaginecrafts I wanted a slouchy hat for winter. I used dark red curly yarn and the “Another Slouchy Hat” pattern by sleepycat. The pattern said if we wanted it more slouchy we could add a couple of rows, and I did, but it [...]
I have searched and searched for something that looks like this and finally found it. Thanks!
I made this slouchy hat. It is very, very pretty. The gauge seemed a little strange to me, so I did it with a cast on of 80 stitches, and knit a few more rows than what it called for. The size of my needles aren’t marked, but I think they’re about a 5 mm. Seems to fit me or my eight-year-old daughter equally fine. It was so much fun to knit that I’m in the middle of my second one, and will be starting a third one shortly. I think I will cast on with 72 stitches on the third one though.
Really well-written directions – easy to follow.
Thank you for sharing!
Just to let you know, it’s called a tam.
Slouchy hat, lol.
I made this Slouchy Hat (I prefer the term “Slouchy Hat” to “Tam”, thankyouverymuch). It was only the second hat I’ve ever made and I LOVE IT!
I made this thing in only one night, which is a record for me, and I’m actually unashamed to wear it (another first)! I’m going to do another one this weekend. I think I’ll try casting on more stitches and using a smaller needle for the ribbing to make it stretchier. I’ll also do more rows to make it slouchier. Everybody I know is getting one of these things for Christmas. Whether they like it or not. I’m so thrilled! Thank you thank you Sleepycat!
Im so glad I found your blog! This hat is great but I was looking for a crochet slouchy beret (on Ravelry) if at all possible. What does “magic loop” mean btw? I am a knitter but don’t work on circulars if I can help it. LOL
Great blog and BFN, Geraldine
I love this hat, its just what I’ve been looking for but I cannot knit on round needles. (Grandmother taught me with needle under arm/can’t break the habit) My question is, can I make this on steraight needles then just sew it together?? Thanks for your response
Hat looks great but I can’t open the link. Would love to have the pattern e-mailed to me! Thanks
i needbut what is M1 knit wise ? to make a slouchy hat can’t find a beret i like to buy but what is M1 knit wise i assume it’s an increase
I’m just a beginner and don’t know if I ‘should’ attempt this….love it though!
In case I just cannot help myself…could you tell me
1. what is M1knit-wise? (mark one at the K1)?
2. what is m1 purl-wise (mark one at the P1)?
3. what is magic loop?
Thanks for the pattern. Looks REALLY neat!
Magic loop is a way of knitting in the round on long circular needles. I like it a lot better than working with dpns. Plus you’re less likely to loose a circular in the couch than a dpn. There’s a video at http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/advanced-techniques
There is a great tutorial on M1 Knitwise and M1 Purlwise at http://www.planetpurl.com/community/index.php?page=videos§ion=browse&category=3 Just scroll down to the bottom of the first page of videos.
Enjoy!
I know I’m missing something but I didn’t see how to get 72 stitches on round 7 of Another Slouchy Hat. I got 64. I went ahead and finished the hat and really like it a lot. I just would like to understand what I am missing so I can make another one, but make it right.
I help teach a crochet class in our church–mostly seniors citizens like myself. I don’t see the directions for doing to the M1knit-wise. I am thinking it must be an increase as you do give the reverence of the “nearly invisible increase. This pattern is just what one of the ladies is looking for. Thanks again.
Hi im a total beginner in knitting and this would be my first project.
I just want to know how you would actually join the knitting together such that it is a beret in the end!
and what do you mean by ‘knit around’??
thanks heaps.
sweet! I like the slouchy hats. Got a few on the sticks right now!
I love this hat! I made 6 of them last winter for family and friends. I will make this one again and again.
I would like to make your Another Slouchy Hat but reading the instructions found I do not understand M1 purl-wise of M1 knit-wise. When referred to invisible knitting from TECHknitting, I could not find an explanation.
Can anyone help me?
It seems that the video I referred to in the comments for M1P is gone. Here is another video by Flow Design Studio showing the stitch. It’s kind of like a purled version of kfb. Thanks!
This is exactly what I’m looking for, but the link would not open. Can someone send me the pattern?
I would really like this pattern. Looks pretty.
Thank you
Shirley
I’ve been spending a few days now trying to find hats that weren’t your typical, generic knitted/crocheted hats. I found your pattern on KnittingPatternCentral.com and I wanted to thank you….I’ve finally found a hat I can make and love!
Really love this hat pattern! I cannot download the pattern and would like to have it emailed to me if possible. I have been looking all over the internet for a pattern I like and found it! Hope you can email me. Thanks
I am a fairly new knitter and this pattern is PERFECT.
Very easy to follow. I added a few rows where you suggested to make is a LITTLE more slouchy. Thank you so much!! Plus, your yarn is adorable!
The link isn’t working. :<
I was looking forward to making this hat.
The link worked for me. Thank you so much for the pattern! It is exactly what I am looking for. I like the idea of making these for charity. I am going to make one for my Mom who is very sick, but this would be great for any cancer patients who don’t have hair. I hope it is easy enough for a beginner. Thank you again!
Hi, I was looking for a hat that resembled a picture my sister in law sent me and I think this is the closest I’m going to get! I can’t seem to be able to open the link though… I see that some can get in and some can’t, just wondering if you need a certain program to open the pattern? Thanks.
Nevermind, it worked! I had to open it twice so while the first one didn’t work, I left the link open, I tried it again in a second window and it worked. It could have been that I also logged into my ravelry account and then it seemed to open. So I don’t know which one did it but it worked.

Thanks for the pattern and pictures. Barb Smith in Jan. 2010 commented that on round 7 she got 64 stitches and not 72 stitches like the pattern says it should be. I’ve had the same problem.
I see that the pattern repeat for round 7 is worked over 6 stitches, 2 increases per repeat. With a cast-on of 48, this works out to be 8 repeats. 8 repeats times 2 increases per repeat equals 16 increases over the whole round. 16 increases added to the original 48 stitches from round 6 equals 64 stitches. Making this 8 stitches less than the pattern says it should turn out to be. That’s the way the math works out and that’s the way it has worked out on the project itself all three times I’ve tried it.
Logically then round 8 is thrown off.
I’m wondering if you could help figure out what I’m missing. You have so many commenters stating their’s has worked up just fine. So I’m sure I’m just missing something along the way. However, I am wondering why Barb Smith has had the same conclusion that I have had.
I’ve been knitting long enough now to know even a slight variation/deviation can cause different results than intended. I have a great respect for those who write knit and crochet patterns. I was taught long ago not to doubt the pattern, generally speaking, because it usually works out in the end. I don’t want to move forward with this until I can understand what I’m doing wrong, so that I can have the proper end result for this beautiful slouchy hat. My mother and I would greatly appreciate your help with this. She, being fairly new to knitting, is the one who got me involved with this project so that I can assist her through it.
Thanks so much.
