Silly me.
The good news is exams are written. 3,350 words in about 3 hours. Oral defense TBA sometime in late March.
The bad news is Tuesday night it rained. Then it rained some more. We know there is a spot under the stairs in the basement that gets a bit damp. The someone-threw-a-10-gallon-bucket-of-water-on-the-floor sort of damp. Not a big deal but you need to put a couple of towels down. So DH checked it before the main part of the storm came through and put a towel down. The thunder and lighting part of the storm hit, woke ChaosGirl up, and we all sat around waiting for it to pass. It passed, we got her back in bed and went back downstairs to check and probably change the towel.
Another towel was needed but when DH went over to the laundry area to get another towel he found water over there too. A lot of water. Like an inch or so deep of water all along the wall. And down the wall out of the laundry area into some of the finished part of the basement. Carpet was soppy and water was standing. We’ve been in this house a year and a half and never had water over there before.
I checked the very back of the basement and found water dripping. from. the ceiling. in the workshop. The workshop is under the front porch. Part of the ceiling is raw concrete from the porch and steps. Part of the steps are a little crumbly. Crumbly enough that water seeped through and dripped all over the tool bench. And the radar said more rain was coming in about an hour.
We spent a good hour or so cleaning up the water and trying to figure out exactly where it was coming from in the laundry area. Unfortunately, the determination was that it was coming through in more than one spot. We waited out the second wave of rain – which fortunately kind of fell apart before it got to us – put down some more towels just in case and went to bed.
Needless to say, it was a long day.
But wait, there’s more.
Wednesday – that’s yesterday for you all keeping count – my mom calls. Seems my dad has been loosing a lot of weight. He has also turned yellow. This tends to be bad. The levels of whatever you count in the liver are about 500 times higher than they should be. Apparently there is a small tumor on his pancreas pressing against whatever moves bile in around the liver and pancreas (can you tell I’m not medically inclined here?) and the bile has “backed up.”
They’re going to scope the tumor and see if it’s cancerous or not but he has to get checked out by his heart doc first (since he had quintuple bypass surgery around 10 years ago) so it won’t be until next week.
Oh, yeah. And today’s my birthday. Whoo. Freakin’. Hoo.

Oh, that is SO not right. Sorry to hear you’re having a rough patch, and on your birthday, too! FEH!!!!
Happy birthday, anyway – and a bunch of warm birthday wishes for Much Better Things!
Ugh… that’s a whole lot of suck all piled up in a couple of days. I hope the basement cleaning/sealing goes quickly (and inexpensively!) and I’ll keep your dad in my thoughts in the hopes that his problems turn out to be easily fixable!
Hang in there…
Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about all that crumminess. I hope this week is off to a better start.
